Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has hit out at ‘false rumours’ after quitting the Africa Cup of Nations to return to Arsenal for medical checks over heart lesions diagnosis. Goal report
The former Gunners captain is returning to the club after he was diagnosed with heart lesions following testing positive for Covid.
The Gabonese striker has now been forced to address ‘false rumours’ and insisted that he wishes the Gabon team well in his absence.
Aubameyang tweeted: ‘We have some problems that are hard to resolve by themselves, then rumours get thrown into the mix.
‘We have to look after our health first and foremost. I’m not going to talk about the false rumours and I truly hope our team goes as far as possible.’
Gabon manager Patrice Neveu stated earlier on Monday that Aubameyang and his teammate, Nice’s Mario Lemina, will undergo further assessments at their clubs.
‘Since yesterday, the decision was taken to send them home to their club,’ Neveu told Goal.
‘We can’t judge it here [in Cameroon], we can’t assess the pathology of Covid here.
‘Mario must return to Nice and Pierre returns to Arsenal.
‘It’s a decision that we’ve taken among ourselves.’
Aubameyang has not featured in either of Gabon’s two games so far in Group C of AFCON, with the country beating Comoros 1-0 and playing a 1-1 draw with Ghana in his absence.
The 32-year-old was stripped of the captaincy at Arsenal before heading to Cameroon, after a series of disciplinary issues.
