The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) took action against Senate Speaker Godzwill Akpabio over remarks made to the plenary session on Tuesday, Aug 8, 2023 promised to sue against.
SERAP announced in a statement on it’s Twitter account that it will sue the Senate Speaker over the comments. Akpabio’s gaffe sparked controversy across the country, raising questions about the legitimacy and timing of these transfers.
Nigerians have since condemned the handing over of “tokens”to senators, calling it unjust and reckless, especially at atoms when many Nigerians are suffering.
“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP stated.
Details of the lawsuit, including plaintiffs and their specific charges, have not yet been released.
