The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is utterly dismayed by the calamitous flooding that has devastated Mokwa, Niger State, resulting in the loss of over 88 lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and to the entire community affected by this disaster.

In a statement released by the Association President, Dr Usman Akanbi through the General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji Ph.D said, This tragedy brings back memories of the severe flooding that affected the Maiduguri metropolis in recent times, highlighting the vulnerability of Nigerian cities to climate-related disasters. As writers and custodians of the nation’s cultural heritage, we are deeply concerned about the impact of these tragedies on our communities and the nation at large.

The ANA urges the government at all levels to conduct a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of this flooding, including the potential role of infrastructure failures and climate-related factors. We also call upon the government to take concrete steps to improve the infrastructure in Mokwa and surrounding areas.

By taking these steps, we can work together to build safer and more resilient communities. The ANA pledges its support to the people of Mokwa and commits to using its platform to raise awareness about the need for disaster preparedness and mitigation.
