Justice James Omotoso of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on all seven terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
Delivering judgment on November 20, the presiding judge stated that the prosecution presented sufficient and credible evidence to establish Kanu’s guilt. The court noted that Kanu did not present a defense, instead choosing to rely on the prosecution’s case, leaving the court with no option but to accept the evidence presented.
Justice Omotoso confirmed that Kanu was a member of IPOB and its affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), both of which have been proscribed. The court also found that Kanu, through multiple broadcasts, incited his followers to violence, resulting in the killing of security personnel and the destruction of property, including police stations across Nigeria.
This landmark ruling marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to curb activities by proscribed groups and maintain national security.
