A foreign woman living in Lagos has sparked conversation online after sharing a list of things that continue to amaze her about Nigeria, despite having lived in the country for several years.
She began by applauding Nigeria’s banking and fintech system, which she described as far more advanced than what she experienced in Europe. According to her, instant money transfers — something Nigerians have enjoyed for years — are only just becoming common in European banks.
“If you do a bank transfer here, the receiver gets it immediately… like in seconds,” she said, praising how fast the country’s fintech ecosystem is growing.
She was also fascinated by the ability to borrow mobile data in Nigeria. In her words, running out of data isn’t a major problem because network operators allow users to borrow and repay later.
“You can just borrow data and even buy new data with the borrowed one. It makes sense,” she added.
Another surprising experience for her is how rarely she falls sick in Lagos. Back in Europe, she said she battled seasonal flu, stomach bugs, and constant respiratory infections. But since moving to Nigeria, she has felt “perfectly fine.”
“Nothing. Nothing. Apart from malaria. Foreigners, be careful with malaria,” she advised.
She went on to mention how Nigerian plants behave during the dry season. Unlike Europe — where vegetation quickly turns yellow — she noted that grass and plants in Lagos stay green much longer, even with little rain.
However, the biggest culture shock for her — and the one she described as “very controversial” — is the tendency of some Nigerian men to urinate in public without shame.
According to her, even though public urination does happen in Europe, men there usually make an effort to hide. In Nigeria, she claims, some do it openly and without hesitation.
“Some men do it right in your face,” she said, expressing her disbelief.
