The Imo State Police Command has taken into custody a 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju, from Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri-West Local Government Area, over an alleged defilement case.

Police said the arrest was based on credible information provided by the victim’s family after the incident gained widespread attention on social media. The case came to public notice following a viral video in which the victim’s sister appealed for help, alleging that the suspect sexually assaulted her underage sibling and later threatened the family.

According to the video, the family claimed that officers at a police station near the Imo State Government House demanded ₦100,000 before agreeing to record the victim’s statement.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said the suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where a comprehensive investigation is ongoing.

Okoye noted that the suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.

He also disclosed that the command has identified and detained the police officers accused of misconduct in the handling of the case. According to him, an Orderly Room Trial has been scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12, 2026, in line with existing police regulations.

The police command assured the public of its resolve to ensure justice and uphold professional standards within the force.
