The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has arrested two men for allegedly trying to smuggle illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, to inmates at the Nomansland Court Complex in Kano State.
The suspects, identified as Usman Khalid and Bello Musa Ahmed, both residents of the Tsamiya (Brigade) area of Kano, were apprehended by NCoS officers attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Goron Dutse.
The command’s spokesperson, Musbahu Lawan, said in a statement on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, that the suspects were caught attempting to throw prohibited substances to inmates during court proceedings. He noted that the arrest followed heightened vigilance by correctional officers tasked with securing inmates during transportation to and from court—a period often exploited by criminals to breach security.
Lawan warned members of the public against interacting with inmates during court appearances, stressing that such actions constitute a serious security breach punishable under the law.
The Controller of the Command, Ado Inuwa, has directed that the suspects and the recovered substances be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Reaffirming the service’s commitment to inmate rehabilitation and reformation, the NCoS said it would not tolerate any act that undermines its mandate or compromises security within custodial facilities and court premises. The command also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for drug-related activities and called on the public to cooperate with security agencies to maintain law and order across Kano State.
