Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Modupeola Bamisade, over her alleged involvement in an online gadget scam that reportedly defrauded more than 100 victims of over ₦500 million.
According to police sources, the suspect posed as an online vendor dealing in iPhones, iPads and other Apple products, which she advertised at heavily discounted prices to attract customers. She allegedly offered discounts of up to 50 per cent to lure buyers through social media platforms.
A police source disclosed on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, that Bamisade relied on social media influencers to promote the fake sales. Victims reportedly made payments for the gadgets but never received the items.
“She operates as an online seller of Apple products and uses influencers to advertise massive sales at about 50 per cent discount,” the source said. “Over time, she succeeded in defrauding more than 100 unsuspecting individuals, with losses exceeding ₦500 million.”
Police further alleged that after collecting payments, the suspect routinely delayed delivery by giving various excuses or completely avoided fulfilling the orders. During interrogation, she reportedly admitted using influencers to reach potential buyers and attract customers online.
Another source familiar with the case revealed that her arrest followed a complaint by one of the influencers who became suspicious after receiving multiple complaints from customers who claimed they had been duped.
“One of the influencers reported her to the police, which led to her arrest,” the source said, adding that several victims later visited the command to identify the suspect.
One of the victims recounted paying ₦1 million for a phone that was never delivered. “After payment, she claimed the phone had arrived and would be delivered soon, but she kept giving different excuses. At one point, someone even called pretending to be a delivery rider, but no one showed up,” the source added.
