A man has admitted responsibility for the death of his former wife in a case that has deeply affected the community in Cardiff, Wales.
Thisara Weragalage, 37, who was born in Sri Lanka, initially denied the charge but later pleaded guilty in court. His former wife, Nirodha Niwunhella, 32, was found unresponsive in the Riverside area of Cardiff on August 21 last year. Emergency services arrived quickly, but she could not be saved.
Weragalage was arrested shortly after the incident. During a hearing at Newport Crown Court, he admitted to the charge, and the judge ordered that he remain in custody until his sentencing date in February.
Following Nirodha’s passing, her family released a statement describing her as a loving daughter, family member, and friend. They said she was remembered for her kindness, warmth, and the positive impact she had on the people around her.
Neighbours also expressed sadness, saying the community was shocked by the loss of a young woman with a bright future.
An investigation was carried out, and the coroner confirmed that her death was not from natural causes. The court proceedings will continue as the legal system works to bring the case to a conclusion.
