Michael Carrick has reached a verbal agreement with Manchester United to take over as the club’s interim head coach until the end of the season.
The former United midfielder will replace Darren Fletcher, who stepped in on a temporary basis after Ruben Amorim was dismissed. Fletcher, who normally coaches the club’s Under-18s team, led United in recent matches against Burnley and Brighton. He oversaw a 2–2 draw at Turf Moor before the team were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton, with former United striker Danny Welbeck scoring the winning goal.
Carrick will now take charge of the first team until the summer as the club looks to steady their season and improve results. The 44-year-old is a five-time Premier League winner and previously had a short spell in charge of United in late 2021 following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland is expected to join Carrick’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.
United held face-to-face interviews with Carrick earlier in the week, as well as with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before deciding to move forward with Carrick for the interim role.
