Manchester City players have pledged to reimburse supporters who travelled to Norway following the club’s shock 3–1 Champions League defeat to Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday night.
The English champions endured a difficult evening in freezing Arctic conditions as the Norwegian side secured their first-ever Champions League victory. Kasper Hogh struck twice in quick succession, while Jens Petter Hauge added a stunning solo goal to seal a famous win. Rayan Cherki scored City’s only goal, but a second-half red card for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri further compounded the visitors’ problems.
In the aftermath of the defeat, senior City players Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland released a joint statement acknowledging the dedication of fans who made the long journey to northern Norway.
“Our supporters mean everything to us,” the statement read. “It was a lot of travelling for the fans who supported us in the freezing cold throughout a difficult evening on the pitch. Covering the cost of these tickets for the fans who travelled to Bodo is the least we can do.”
The players will refund all 374 travelling supporters, with a total reimbursement of £9,357. Each fan had paid approximately £25 for their ticket.
Kevin Parker, speaking on behalf of Manchester City’s Official Supporters Club, praised the gesture, describing it as a reflection of the strong bond between the team and its supporters. While admitting the defeat was disappointing, he expressed confidence that fans would continue to back the team in the matches ahead.
Manchester City will now turn their focus to domestic action as Pep Guardiola’s side prepare to host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. City currently sit second in the Premier League with 43 points from 22 matches, seven points behind leaders Arsenal.
