Two persons are feared dead after unknown gunmen attacked an Army Checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu road in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State on Tuesday, September 27. Eyewitnesses say the hoodlums stormed the area in two Lexus SUVs and one Toyota Sienna bus around 7:25 am. They reportedly opened fire at the combined team of Police and military. The federal government has withdrawn its order to vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors and governing councils to re-open federal universities in the country. The Federal Government had through the National Universities Commission, in a circular tagged NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 and addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities ordered the reopening of universities. However in another circular tagged NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136, which was also signed by the Director, Finance and Account of the NUC, Sam Onazi, the commission withdrew the order. The Federal government has asked vice-chancellors of all public universities to reopen their universities and resume lectures. Punch reports that the federal government gave the directive through the National Universities Commission (NUC) in a letter signed by Sam Onazi, director, of finance and accounts of the NUC, on behalf of Abubakar Rasheed, executive secretary of the commission.
