In 2010, the department of mass communication was established in Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The management survived to be regulating only the National Diploma (ND) in mass communication, graduates of the institution opted for other Polytechnics for their Higher National Diploma (HND) while some applied to the Universities of their choices via Direct Entry. The challenges faced during the process(es) were really cumbersome for the students, as many institutions admitted based on the available capacity and their erstwhile students (those that graduated from the institution) were placed advantage ahead of those that graduated from Kwarapoly. Such a parochial consideration!

However, a new administration took over the helm of affairs on October 27, 2019. This team of innovators is led by Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed who has, within the limited time, ushered in many outstanding achievements in the institution, ranging from a first ever pedal-operated hand washing machine in replace of traditional one during the global eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic; hostel renovation with adequate facilities; 2,000 capacity ultra modern auditorium which was befittingly named after late. Former Governor. Muhammed Alabi Lawal; introduction of CBT exams; Revived
22 industrial machines in wood workshop at the Institute of Technology (IOT); Revived 8 dead training facilities in civil engineering department; Installed and organised training for staff on 2 digital industrial lath and 4 other trainings equipment which has been in the box for a decade; Revived Network Operating Center for provision of internet connectivity on campus.
Facilitated TETFund take over of storey building hostel abandoned for over a decade; Brought back the famous IJMB program;
Initiated National Diploma in Entrepreneurship which the graduates of the programme goes to 200 Level in KWASU; Reduction of the part-time academic calendar to two years; provision of fast food like bakery industry; water factory among several others feats. An altruistic corporate member of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Registered Engineer with the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), corporate member of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Data Processing Management. Recently, he notably emerged as the best Rector of the year 2021. No doubt, it was well deserved.

In a bid to make the Polytechnic an outstanding citadel of learning, he masterminded the institution’s Kwarapoly FM with frequency 88.5, which is well-equipped with modern broadcasting tools and devices. In line with NBTE requirements, a standard radio station was needed to approve the institution’s age-long desire to run an HND in Mass Communication. So, premised on the successful completion of a modern radio station in the name of the Polytechnic and a proper scrutiny by the NBTE accreditation team in recent month, on the 23rd day of January, 2022, the institution was formally granted the permission to run a Higher National Diploma programme in Mass Communication, and the application form was released by the management with immediate effect.

Behold, a standard citadel of knowledge with smooth academic calendar under the able leadership of Dr. Abdul Jimoh. The light that seems dim at the end of the tunnel is now shining and lighting the dark cave. His meritorious achievements keep setting Kwara State Polytechnic in befitting position among other Polytechnics in Nigeria.

Applaud the record breaker. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed. The Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
